Two self-proclaimed hipsters got married and choreographed their processional to Animal Collective’s My Girls. It’s the indie equivalent of that viral video where the wedding party dances to Chris Brown’s “Forever”, just a lot more sloppy and awkward. While watching the clip, I disliked seeing the bride’s apprehensive parents play along with their son-in-laws gravity-bong dream. Even some members of the bridal party looked as if they were crawling in their skin. I read the grooms account of the event on hipsterrunoff.com, and he is deluded enough to think that this display was “meaningful.” Was it also meaningful to have the ceremony in a church? There was an uncomfortable juxtaposition of creaky minwax-scented tradition with lysergic tribal vibes. The bride’s parents must have pulled the longer straw with that one. I think the real meaning was to alienate most of the guests, piss off the in-laws, and to own bragging rights for doing all the above while being “cool.”
And isn’t it wacky that there is/are an Animal Collective cover band(s)? They’ve barely existed for half a decade and they haven’t disbanded yet. What’s next then? A Yeasayer tribute band? A homage to Neon Indian? It’s amazing how hyper-derivative music and media has become.
